December WARDian of the Month: Penny!
How did you first hear about roller derby?
My son's friend dragged him along to a juniors' training session. A few of the other parent played in Perth Men's Derby and convinced me to give it a go. Best decision ever!
What is something that you know about roller derby now that you wish you knew when you first started?
That it is a continual learning curve! Game play and strategy evolve and adapt, so don't beat yourself up if you don't know all of the things - you most likely never will as there is always something new to learn.
What is the roller derby goal you are working towards right now?
Hockey stop to the left - this is my perpetual derby goal! My broader derby goals will be to work well in my position with my team mates and also to help develop the amazing new skaters coming through.
What do you do to keep your derby brain switched on?
Watching games, talking about strategy, and keeping skates on my feet.
Who in WARD is inspiring you at the moment?
So many people! There are so many WARD members that are putting in the effort with their training and doing amazing things like NSOing, reffing and volunteering. Mandy and Freya are always around with smiling faces and you can always find Cinnamon and Vector in the middle of the track! Not to mention the tireless efforts of our president Pants.
What keeps you enthused about roller derby?
Seeing so many new people find their love of skating and playing derby!
Who do you nominate as our next WARDian of the Month?
I would have to say without a doubt Francesca. She is at every training session and scrim rallying the NSOs. She gives so much of her time to WARD and it is greatly appreciated.
