April WARDian of the Month: Nail 'Er Swift!

Published Mon 14 Jun 2021

How did you first hear about roller derby?

Probably “Whip it” like most people, but I stumbled across a game years before I joined and it just stuck in my mind as such an inclusive, welcoming and empowering environment I wanted to be a part of.

What is something that you know about roller derby now that you wish you knew when you first started?

It’s a never ending learning curve. It’s hard not to compare yourself to others but there is never going be a moment of “that’s it, I’ve learned how to roller derby” so the most important thing is to keep working on your own goals at your own pace. It’s a sport for anyone and everyone. No matter your size shape or strength you will be an asset on the track.

What is the roller derby goal you are working towards right now?

Building my confidence in blocking on my own and chasing down those pesky jammers.

What do you do to keep your derby brain switched on?

Getting in as much skate time as possible and staying connected to the derby community. It can be easy to lose your mojo with the state of uncertainty and interruptions we live in now, but every training sessions I’ve gone to, whether I felt like going or not, has left me overjoyed and inspired and I try to hold on to that when I’m losing motivation.

Who in WARD is inspiring you at the moment?

I really want to say everyone. It’s been a tough year and everyone has their own stuff going on but it’s always positive vibes all round. But I will give a special mention to Tiny who is not only an incredible skater but is so dedicated to coaching and developing others.

What keeps you enthused about roller derby?

Definitely the amazing community and the non-stop learning opportunities.

Who do you nominate as our next WARDian of the Month?

Brawla, for her incredible dedication to the team, helping out at training and games even while off skates.
